Overview

Umami is a web and product analytics platform that brings traffic, campaigns, visitor behavior, conversions and revenue together in one place. The repository describes it as privacy-first: no cookies and no surveillance. A live demo is linked from the README.

It can be installed on your own server, either from source (Node.js 18.18 or later and a PostgreSQL 12.14 or later database) or with Docker, or used in the cloud. The README also mentions an MCP endpoint, disabled by default, which is enabled with the MCP_ENABLED=1 variable and an API key.

Highlights

  • Traffic, campaigns, behavior, conversions and revenue in a single tool.
  • Described as cookie-free and free of surveillance.
  • Self-hosting from source (pnpm, PostgreSQL database) or with Docker and Docker Compose.
  • Optional two-factor authentication, available once the TWO_FACTOR_ENCRYPTION_KEY variable is set.
  • Optional /mcp endpoint, disabled by default, using an API key created under Settings → API keys.

Who it is for

For anyone who wants to measure the audience and conversions of a site or product without cookies, self-hosted or in the cloud. The documented installation assumes a server with Node.js and PostgreSQL, or Docker.

Installation

The README describes two routes: the Docker image or docker compose (the docker-compose.yml file is in the repository, with a PostgreSQL database), or installation from source with pnpm, an .env file containing DATABASE_URL, then build and start. A detailed guide is linked at umami.is/docs.

Commands

Read the project README before running these commands.

docker pull docker.umami.is/umami-software/umami:latest
docker compose up -d

Points of attention

  • Requirements for installing from source: Node.js 18.18 or later and PostgreSQL 12.14 or later.
  • The README states that the first build creates a login user admin with the password umami, which has to be taken into account when deploying.
  • Two-factor authentication is unavailable until the TWO_FACTOR_ENCRYPTION_KEY key is set.

Can an agent use it?

No SKILL.md, AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md at the repository root. The only agent-related item is the optional MCP endpoint mentioned in the README; its tools are not described.
